Events industry contributes £10.9bn, party manifestos and the events sector, and more

This month’s news round-up brings you some of the industry and association news from June 2024, including events industry contributing £10.9bn, party manifestos and the events sector, and more, and more.

Events industry contributes £10.9 billion to UK economy.

The business events industry helped to boost the UK economy by £10.9 billion in 2023, according to a new economic report by the Events Industry Alliance (EIA).

Marija Erzen, co-owner, Solutions 2 (UK) Ltd, ESSA and EIA chair, commented, “We are delighted with the results of our latest economic impact report. A 17% growth in the events industry between 2022 and 2023, demonstrates that, whilst other areas of the economy are struggling, the events industry is growing exponentially in a challenging economic environment and with little help from the Government.”

Erzen added, “These figures bring us just shy of our pre-pandemic levels of economic impact (£11bn) and the events industry’s strong growth really demonstrates our potential and resilience as an industry during an economically challenging year for many. We hope that these positive figures encourages the next Government to really notice and pay attention to our industry.”

Particularly promising is the increase in the number of events. The recent Size and Scale Index for Exhibitions (SASIE) report, published earlier this year, revealed over 1,000 exhibitions were held in 2023, demonstrating the industry’s resilience and innovation in the face of economic challenges.

Rachel Parker, director, AEV and EIA said, “The number of exhibitions over the last year is really promising, including both new and long standing repeat exhibitions. The dynamism of the sector to move with new trends and trades when they emerge in the economy is a particular strength and one that we hope to see more of in the future.”

Parker continued, “The positive growth in the industry feeds into other areas of the economy and helps explain the dynamic and far reaching potential of the industry, so it is not only the events industry that benefits from the growth of the sector.”

Beyond the events themselves, the 6.9 million attendees generate substantial spending in hospitality, travel and hotels. In 2023, the events industry made a significant contribution to the UK GDP, valued at £5.5 billion, and helped to support 114,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.

Working on behalf of the events industry associations, the Association of Event Organisers (AEO), the Association of Event Venues (AEV), and the Event Supplier and Services Association (ESSA), the Events Industry Alliance (EIA) provides a secretariat and platform to work together to achieve common objectives for the good of the events industry.

Lime Venue Portfolio (LVP) has partnered with Stress Matters to launch a new neurodiversity toolkit.

The toolkit launched at The Meetings Show in June 2024 and is now be available to support clients and customers across the group’s 80+ venues.

In the last few years, the brand has bought new intelligence to the industry, including insight around ‘sustainability through food’, ‘event legacy and impact’, and is now looking towards accessibility, specifically Neurodiversity.

Within this toolkit, you will find practical strategies and resources to ensure that your events are accessible and enjoyable for all participants. From sensory-friendly environments to clear communication practices, each recommendation is grounded in the principles of empathy, understanding, and respect for neurodiverse perspectives.

Meeting Needs celebrates big boost in fund-raising at showcase event

Event industry foundation Meeting Needs celebrated their best fund-raising result for eight years at their annual showcase event at the Radisson Blu Bloomsbury.

Current year income has topped £150,000 for the first time since 2016, reflecting a return to growth for the industry and the foundation, said chair Chris Parnham, when he welcomed guests including original founding trustees, Peter Rand MBE and Charles Blowfield.

Strata acquires Trinity Event Solutions

  • Strata Group adds venue-finding expertise to expand agency services
  • Trinity acquisition meets client demand for venue search and management

Strata, the award-winning brand experience agency, has acquired Trinity Event Solutions, the venue procurement and event management agency. This latest acquisition boosts Strata’s ambitious growth plans, cementing its commitment to providing clients with full-service support and delivery.

Founded in 2006 by Jacqui Kavanagh, Trinity Event Solutions is a venue finding agency with extensive experience and a strong customer base in the pharma, legal, financial and retail markets.

Strata is on a mission to strengthen and broaden its client offering, adding new divisions and businesses to the group that complement the agency’s already wide-ranging breadth of services.

The agency has always understood that the right venue choice is paramount to the successful delivery of events. Therefore, its acquisition of Trinity Event Solutions – with its deep venue insight – is both a strategic and pivotal move for the group.

Simon Hambley, CEO of Strata, said: “I am incredibly excited and proud to be bringing the amazing Trinity team into the Strata Group family. We have been considering a partnership acquisition in the venue search and management sector for a while, not only to meet growing client needs but to capitalise on an area we haven’t touched on much in the past: Strategic Meetings Management.”

Hambley continued: “We have worked with Jacqui and her team for some time now, and recognised that Trinity’s drive for quality, responsiveness and customer service matched our own. A strong cultural fit and ethos are so important in today’s modern business world that this new partnership feels right. It gives the Strata business access to experienced talent and technology and greater bargaining power and scale, meaning we can go to market and offer strategic meetings management services at volume.”

Trinity Event Solutions prides itself on working as a seamless extension of any team. This is why the agency has many long-standing global clients. It has a strong client focus and an empowered team of proven experts who have devoted years to forging lasting relationships.

Strata serves its extensive portfolio of clients by offering a broad range of event services, including creative, design, planning and execution expertise, but continued client wins have driven demand for venue search and management. By acquiring Trinity Event Solutions, Strata can further develop an exciting blueprint for its future.

Hambley added: “The timing of this acquisition is set for the true re-emergence of business event planning post-pandemic. The international business meetings markets are forecast to double in size over the next eight years and the winning combination of Strata and Trinity is ideally placed to service the conference, congress and strategic meetings management markets as they hit their stride.”

On the acquisition, Jacqui Kavanagh, founder and CEO of Trinity Event Solutions, said: “I have known Simon and the Strata team for many years and have admired their approach and passion for excellence in how they operate their business.

“I am really excited for the Trinity team to become part of the Strata Group, as they truly reflect the cultural values that have underpinned the journey that Trinity has been on for 17 years.”

Tracy Winsworth, Managing Director of Trinity Event Solutions, said: “The Trinity team and I are ready to grow and take our next step. Joining the Strata Group will accelerate this growth and I am sure our venue sourcing and procurement expertise will strengthen the group’s position in the market and stand it in good stead for the future.”

Strata’s acquisition of Trinity Event Solutions follows its acquisition of On Event Production in April 2023 and more recently, its recent appointment of Caroline Lumgair Wiseman as Group Head of Strategic Meeting Solutions.

Lumgair Wiseman will work closely with the Trinity Event Solutions team as she has been specifically tasked with helping Strata build a stronger meetings management proposition to directly meet client demand.

EDGE Venues will remain independent and continue to be led by Jacqui Kavanagh. She will maintain collaborative relationships with both Trinity Event Solutions and Strata.

Why bleisure travel can level up your event

Inside a hotel meeting room with floor-to-ceiling-windows, with a meetings tables covered in black table clothes, and night time darkness outside the windows.

Planners are striving to find venues that can deliver extraordinary experiences while also engaging attendees. The pressure is on to create that all-important ‘wow’ factor and provide one-of-a-kind experiences that cater to attendees’ ever-growing expectations. This is where the trend of bleisure travel comes in.

Rise of Bleisure Travel

In 2024, venues are looking to capitalise on the concept of bleisure travel, where business travellers incorporate leisure experiences with their work trips, and leisure travellers combine working remotely with their desire to travel.

For venues, this presents a new revenue opportunity while continuing to provide planners with the facilities, technology, and exclusive offers to create memorable events.

With more people working remotely because of the pandemic and a surge of people starting to travel again, bleisure has seen tremendous growth in recent months. Bleisure was growing before the pandemic but has taken off recently.

There was talk of it taking over traditional business travel in 2022 and beyond. 89% of people plan to add personal vacation time to their business travel this year—many of whom will bring family and friends along.

And it is easy to see the appeal, especially after a tumultuous few years. People can travel for a conference or event and then spend an extended vacation in the area while they work remotely.

Unique Venues See a Surge in Popularity

To meet these demands, planners are prioritising experience-first event design, valuing uniqueness over traditional notions of extravagance. In their quest for bespoke experiences, planners are turning towards unconventional venues in locations that provide a unique aesthetic, so travellers are more likely to extend their stay.

These venues offer more flexible pricing and freedom to transform their event space and bring their vision to life. They also serve as a blank canvas for creativity and allow for the creation of more personalised events.

By embracing the shift towards experience-first events and offering unique experiences, venues can position themselves as highly sought-after partners.

Here are our top picks of venues perfect for bleisure travel, from spa venues to airport hotels.
