Hilton are set to open 30 hotels in the UK over the next two years as it moves to cement the nation’s place as its second largest market outside the US.

The new venues will include sites in London, as well as regional cities such as York and Leeds, with a focus on its Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn brands. The company only opened six UK hotels in 2016 so the growth rate is a step up.

The plans will include the Lincoln Plaza London in Canary Wharf, the second UK hotel in its Curio brand, a collection of independent hotels that retain their identity but are run by Hilton or under a franchise agreement. The latest set of growth plans follow the company opening the largest Hampton by Hilton hotel in the world at Stansted (pictured), meaning it now has sites at 18 UK airports.

Hotel Nh Collection Eurobuilding Madrid Becomes Spains First Hotel To Donate Surplus Event Food To F

“Making Madrid a sustainable city is something we all have to work on: both the visiting tourists and the citizens of Madrid. Therefore, we have subscribed an institutional collaboration agreement to support this initiative by Equoevento, and hope it will set an example for other companies in the hotel and events industry in Madrid,” said Miguel Sanz, Tourism Director, Madrid Destino.

The donation of surplus food on behalf of Hotel NH Collection Eurobuilding, the first hotel in Spain to undertake this initiative, and the distribution of the surplus in food kitchens on behalf of Equoevento, endorsed by the Tourism Department of Madrid Destino, pools the resources of all three players: a leading stakeholder in the tourist industry, hotel group NH; an NGO, Equoevento; and Madrid Council, through the Madrid Destino Tourism Department. The initiative underlines the importance of inter-institutional collaboration to make Madrid a sustainable and generous city.

Tourist sustainability

Madrid is a European leader in the field of event hosting. This puts the Spanish capital on a par with other European destinations and complies with the premises established for this issue by both the European Commission and the World Tourism Organisation, currently celebrating the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development in 2017. The goal is to promote a new model of tourist sustainability in three key areas: economic, sociocultural and environmental.

The Council, through the Madrid Destino Tourism Department, has sponsored the collaboration between the NH Group and NGO Equoevento to donate safe surplus food from events organised at the Hotel NH Collection Eurobuilding to food kitchens. Implementing a meticulous system to collect, preserve and transport food will guarantee that surplus is donated appropriately. This initiative aims to put an end to food waste and help people with fewer resources.

W Barcelona Hotel Wraps Room Renovations

The new W Sound Suite is the first in Europe, following successful roll outs at W Hotels in Bali, Seattle and Hollywood. The private music studio and writer’s room, which was created in partnership with Coca-Cola, allows professional recording artists, studio musicians and producers — as well as any other hotel guest in the suite — to record in style while travelling. The suite includes a private vocal booth and a lounge big enough for artists and their entourages; the space also can be used for master classes in recording, and can be rented for creative brainstorming sessions and the like.

The modular furniture in the guest rooms is a nod to Spanish Tapas joints, with chic, small tables and chairs placed underneath hanging lights. Accent pillows in the rooms are adorned with iconic Barcelona characters like Gaudí, Dalí and St. Eulalia, the co-patron saint of the city. New room amenities include Nespresso coffee machines, tea-making equipment, 49-inch flat-screen TVs and Bose Bluetooth sound systems.

The distinctive sail-shaped hotel has been a landmark on the Barcelona coast since it opened in 2009, and is a popular venue for fashion gatherings and product launches, among many other events. The new room design was inspired by the sea views afforded by many of the rooms, and is based on a colour palette of blue with pops of white, teal and rose gold. The carpet design, too, was inspired the Mediterranean, and is based on an underwater view of the sea bed.
