Hilton Birmingham Metropole unveils new Conference & Event Spaces

One of the UK’s most expansive overnight meetings and events destinations – has opened its new-look and highly flexible conference and events facilities.

The new spaces are now fully operational and once again ready to accommodate some of the most recognised events in the UK. The new look is visible throughout the hotel’s 6,000sqm of meeting and events facilities, with all 31 event spaces receiving a contemporary facelift that belies the venue’s 45-year tenure.

The hotel’s bedrooms and three new bar and restaurant concepts complete the package, creating environments that celebrate Birmingham’s rich heritage and embrace its culture.

The refurbishment has also underlined one of Hilton Birmingham Metropole’s key selling points; one of exclusivity. The conference and event space is easily divided into three separate and distinctive areas allowing guests exclusive use of sections of the property. The hotel’s event and conference offering also remains diverse, ranging from intimate boardrooms to expansive ballrooms, the largest of which can host up to 2,000 guests.

Leading the project is Nicola Underhill, who joined as general manager in September 2021 from Hilton St George’s Park Hotel.

She said: “This project has been many years in the making, and we sense the anticipation from our guests who know and love the hotel; they really have been on this journey with us. We want to ensure that we can meet the returning industry demand, while remaining focused on delivering outstanding guest experiences within our refreshed hotel environment.

“We have invested hugely in talking to our clients and working with all our stakeholders to ensure the new and improved space not only met with their objectives, but also exceeded their expectations. During its 45-year history, the hotel has secured an enviable reputation and we want to build on that by offering a new contemporary face to the brand.”

Tempo by Hilton brand launched for ‘modern achievers’

Hilton has launched its 18th brand, Tempo, aimed at “modern achievers who seek a hotel experience that reflects their ambition” with lifestyle brand partnerships.

The brand is said to feature elements designed “to help ambitious guests continue their journey without disrupting their routine”, including morning and bedtime ‘rituals’ and mirrors with built-in Bluetooth speakers.

There are already 30 hotels under development for the lifestyle brand, which Hilton describes as “highly scalable”, and 30 more pending deals. Partnerships include Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global, which tackles stress and burnout, and culinary firm Blau + Associates.

The food and beverage concepts, meanwhile, will include a lobby Fuel Bar serving complimentary coffee and teas; a casual café; and a bar serving cocktails and small plates. Additionally, Blau + Associates will collaborate with Hilton to form an advisory board of young up-and-coming chefs who will help curate seasonal menus.

The focus is currently on US cities with confirmed developments in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Hilton said there are currently no plans to bring the brand to Europe.

Jon Witter, chief customer officer at Hilton, said: “Through our research, we found that while our current upscale offerings have been incredibly successful at earning loyalty among specific guest segments, there was a rising demographic of ambitious and highly discerning travellers that weren’t engaging with the category.”

Christopher J. Nassetta, president and chief executive of Hilton, said: “Tempo by Hilton is the latest example of our unique ability to anticipate what our guests are looking for and deliver unmatched value for customers and owners alike.”

Phil Cordell, SVP and global head of new brand development, Hilton, added: “Tempo by Hilton introduces a new concept by combining all the benefits and efficiencies owners expect from a limited service model with an uplifting dose of inspiration.

“Utilising a data-driven blueprint, we identified lifestyle offerings inside the guest rooms and throughout the property that push the entire sector to new heights. The end result is a compelling, yet approachable brand that enables owners to expand their portfolios in sought-after locations across the country as well as capture a new demographic of travellers.”

Hilton’s brand portfolio also includes brands such as Hampton, DoubleTree, and the more recently launched Motto and Signia. The company has a portfolio of nearly 6,000 properties with more than 954,000 rooms in 117 countries and territories.

The Hilton Munich City completes refurbishment

Hilton Munich City is completing refurbishment of the public areas, guest rooms, fitness centre, bar, restaurant and meeting facilities which will transform this 4* hotel.

The location of this hotel is in the city centre, in 10-minutes walking distance of the major attractions. It is above the Rosenheimer Platz S-Bahn station with a lift to the Lobby, which has a direct connection to the airport, convention centre and main railway station. The airport transfer takes about 30 minutes (35km).

There are nine meeting rooms. The largest is the ballroom which has capacity for 300 in theatre-style with a large foyer and courtyard, as well as seven seven multi-purpose rooms and a boardroom. All meeting rooms are located on the ground floor.

The Hilton Munich City has 483 bedrooms and suites and there is an Executive Lounge with terrace. In addition, facilities include a 24-hour gym, the Juliet Rose Bar and Mona Restaurant.

This hotel was awarded Germany’s Leading City Hotel 2019 at the World Travel Awards Europe 2019.

Keeping fit while you’re travelling

We all know how difficult it is to keep fit and healthy when we are travelling and in the events’ industry we are always on the move. The small hotel gym isn’t very appealing and it’s easy to eat and drink more than you would at home. However, there are some exercises that are simple, effective and don’t require much equipment. Some hotel groups are now helping with improved facilities and fitness equipment in the bedroom. At the moment, this seems to be more in North America than Europe, but like most trends it should spread here in time. Here are a few of the hotel groups that make it easier for you to keep fit while you’re away from home.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts offers guests Adidas training gear through their Fairmont Fit progamme. Loyalty club members can have workout clothing, trainers and fitness equipment delivered to their guestrooms for use in the room, gym or outdoors, free of charge.

Yoga gear is easy to pack but the mats and other equipment is not. Kimpton Hotels have yoga mats in bedrooms and they provide extra towels, water, fruit, and on-demand fitness TV programming. Omni Hotels offer a complimentary Get Fit Kit that contains a yoga mat plus weights, a muscle therapy foam roller and push-up bars. Even Hotels, IHG’s wellness brand has four hotels and the group is growing. The bedrooms have a yoga mat and block, foam roller, core exercise ball, mounted fitness wall with resistance bands and an in-room training guide

Scandic Hotels, particularly in Scandinavia, often have bicycles to borrow free of charge and it’s a great way of getting to see the area too. Village Hotels, in the UK, usually have good leisure facilities with group exercise classes, gyms and swimming pools.

Hilton has launched a Five Feet to Fitness concept, where guest bedrooms have guided workout routines on a fitness kiosk, an indoor spin bike, suspension accessories, resistance bands, exercise balls, yoga mats and sports performance flooring. The plan is to introduce this programme to more than 560 of Hilton’s Doubletree hotels by 2020.

Many hotels now offer stationary bikes in-room and Westin has designed WestinWORKOUT rooms in over 50 hotels across the USA, where guests can work out on Peloton bikes.

Mirror, is a digital personal trainer that works though a screen on the wall and instructs on different fitness routines, from yoga and Pilates to boxing and cardio. This technology has been introduced at Mandarin Oriental Hotels’ suites in properties in America.

With a bit of motivation, we can all go back to basics and some squats, sit-ups, press-ups, planks and jacks can all be done in the comfort of a hotel room. A fitness band doesn’t take up any space of weight in your suitcase or there’s always the option of going for a run, walk, or swim. That’s if we have the time!

Hilton Hotels 100th birthday

The London Hilton on Park Lane celebrates 100 Years of Hilton, today which marks a century since founder, Conrad Hilton, opened the first hotel back in Cisco Texas.

Celebrating 100 years of firsts, today is a special milestone for the London Hilton on Park Lane, as it was the first Hilton hotel to open in the UK back in 1963. A specially curated retrospective has been exhibited in the hotel’s lobby taking visitors on a journey of Hilton, both as a global empire and the London Hilton on Park Lane as a London institution, the exhibition closes this Sunday 2 June.

Part of the exhibition looks at the hotels position in Mayfair, both physically right on the doorstep of Hyde Park, but also as a hub for the local community including the economic and cultural impact the UK’s first Hilton has had. The London Hilton on Park Lane is proud to have been the height of glamour when it opened, and continues to pioneer the hospitality and travel industry as we know it.

Celebrations today culminate in the hotel where guests and team members will gather along with Hilton’s President for EMEA, Mr. Simon Vincent OBE and Mr. Jon Scott, Area Vice President London, to cut a special birthday cake, created by Executive Chef Anthony Marshall, and to toast to the next 100 years of Hilton hospitality.

Hilton is opening new hotels in London and Birmingham

The LXR Biltmore Mayfair is due to open in June 2019. It is the first in Europe from Hilton’s new brand LXR, the first hotel in this group was the Habtoor Palace in Dubai. The hotel is located on Grosvenor Square and will have 257 bedrooms and 51 suites. It was previously the Millennium Mayfair Hotel, but following the multi-million-pound refurbishment, it was decided to re-brand as the luxury LXR. For events, the hotel has a 500 sqm ballroom and various smaller meeting rooms for up to 100 attendees.

The Doubletree by Hilton Birmingham has an opening date of October 2019. This property was previously the Royal Angus Hotel in the Snow Hill area of the city. It will have 186 bedrooms and the size of the meeting space is yet to be confirmed. However, two extra floors and a rooftop terrace will be added.

Hilton is introducing another new brand to London, with the Motto by Hilton London Marlebone, which is due to open in the summer of 2020. This property will have about 100 bedrooms and is located in the Old Marlebone Road. Motto Hotels will have ‘an urban vibe in prime global locations’ and will be small. The ‘micro-hotels’ will have multi-functional, rooms that can be customised (pictured above). The concept is aimed at friends and family groups wanting more than a hostel and guests can book multiple connecting rooms with wall beds, lofted beds and multi-functional furniture that can be put away when not required.

Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Accor dominating global hotel pipeline

The global pipeline for new hotels is being dominated by four groups, according to a new report by Lodging Econometrics (LE).

At the end of 2018 Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Accor accounted for over half (55 per cent) of all projects, according to the Global Construction Pipeline Trend Report, which compiles the construction pipeline counts for every country and market around the world.

Marriott International had the most pipeline projects with 2,544, followed by Hilton with 2,252, Intercontinental Hotels Group with 1,716, and Accor with 966. In terms of individual brands, IHG’s Holiday Inn Express had the most pipeline projects with 731.

Analysis shows that the total global construction pipeline hit 13,753 projects at the end of last year, up 7 per cent year-on-year.

Over 5,500 of these projects are in the US, with over 2,700 in China. The two countries between them accounted for over 60 per cent of all global projects, while the UK had a total of 266 pipeline projects (38,590 rooms).

The individual city with the most projects was New York with 171, followed by Dubai with 168, Dallas with 163, LA with 147 and Guangzhou with 132.

LE forecasts that a total of 2,844 hotels will open in 2019 (compared to 2,675 in 2018), with this figure growing to 3,088 in 2020.

Tour of London – site inspection extravaganza

Alex Jarvis from our team took on the challenge to visit eight London hotels in one day and report back on his findings. From his comprehensive sites inspections, take a read of his full report…

Radisson Blu Edwardian New Providence Wharf

The next stop on Alex’s tour of London was the Radisson Blu Edwardian New Providence Wharf – a purpose-built hotel a short walk from Blackwall DLR station, and also about a 10-15 minute walk from Canary Wharf. The hotel is also almost opposite the Thames from the Millennium Dome.

The hotel has a nice airy lobby, with the meeting rooms located upstairs to the right as one enters the property. The meeting rooms are fresh and functional, without any bold colours, and most enjoy natural daylight. The meeting rooms (and the hotel as a whole) is decorated in a sleek corporate style, with the bedrooms of a similar feel. Some of the bedrooms have lovely views across the Thames.

“I enjoyed my visit to the hotel, as it is a nice modern property that appears to be well maintained, in a pleasant modern redeveloped area relatively close to Canary Wharf. I thought the hotel could work well for a mix of events, as well as supporting with accommodation for events at the ExCel centre.”

The Crystal

Continuing on his tour of London, Alex has shared his experience on The Crystal – the home of a permanent exhibition on environmentally-friendly urban development, in a purpose-built property that is one of the most sustainable event venues in the UK, having won several awards.

The Crystal houses dedicated meeting/function rooms, as well as a fixed auditorium. The building itself opens onto a large airy atrium space with lots of glass, called The Street, which is utilised as a catering area for the largest meeting spaces, and also works well for either drinks receptions or sit-down dinners.

Having entered the building, the meeting rooms are to the left of this area, the exhibition space is to the right. The auditorium was nice and fully furnished, while some of the meeting rooms on the first floor have great views over the area (including views of the cable car across the Thames). The exhibition space can also be used for drinks receptions, although this would be with the attendees dispersed through the exhibition rather than all in one space.

Despite being a fixed exhibition, part of the features can be personalised with corporate messages or a particular colour scheme, which is a nice touch for some events. Being close to the ExCel means there are lots of accommodation options within an easy walk of the venue too, which can be a key selling point.

Hilton Canary Wharf

The Hilton Canary Wharf is a modern purpose-built hotel just a short walk (5 minutes) from Canary Wharf, although the closest DLR is South Quay, just a little further down from the hotel. The hotel is a tower, with the meeting rooms located on the first floor, most of which have natural daylight.

The meeting rooms (and the public spaces too) are decorated in an inoffensively corporate manner. The largest meeting room does not have natural daylight, but has a large dedicated pre-function area, that can be used for registration, catering or exhibitions, that has lots of natural light. The bedrooms are nice and spacious too.

Although the hotel is located in a busy area, and has a branch of the DLR running directly outside, the hotel has double glazing on all of their windows so that there is very little to no noise disruption.

Novotel Canary Wharf

A very recent newly-built skyscraper hotel, the Novotel is the tallest hotel-only building in London, at 39 stories. On his tour of London, Alex stopped by to report back on his thoughts on the hotel…

The hotel doesn’t resemble a typical Novotel, it has been decorated throughout with a strong boutique theme to reflect the maritime trading heritage of its location. Throughout the hotel there are touches like photographs of the former Docklands, chains and ropes used as decorations etc.

The nine or so meeting rooms are all located on the first and second floor, all but one are of a small size, and all of these smaller rooms have fixed layouts (mostly boardrooms, a few informal layouts), and all have been decorated to fit a particular theme. E.g. the Logs room with wooden furniture. The largest meeting room, the East India, does have a more flexible layout and is of a medium size. The bedrooms are lovely, and mostly have fantastic views (as you can guess; the higher up the better the view), and have been decorated in the same fashion.

The hotel’s best feature is the Bokan restaurant, located on the 37th, 38th and 39th floors of the hotel (the top floors), with fantastic views over London. Parts of the restaurant can be hired for events, down to small semi-private areas, to a total buy-out. The 39th floor also enjoys a medium-sized outside terrace that can be hired for dinners & drinks receptions.

I visited eight venues in total on the day I visited the Novotel, and I would happily say the Novotel was my personal favourite of the day. I very much enjoyed the views, the restaurant is lovely, and the boutique meeting rooms which have a lot of personality, but still possess all the corporate gadgets that you would expect for a modern hotel.

De Vere Canary Wharf

Stop 6 of his tour of London and Canary Wharf, Alex took in more of the corporate experience that De Vere Canary Wharf has to offer meeting planners…

The De Vere Canary Wharf is located about a 5 minute walk from Canary Wharf, off of Westferry Circus. The venue is also a short walk from Westferry DLR, and is also close to Canary Wharf Pier for Thames Riverboat services.

The venue is very corporate, clean and functional, and is built around a large central atrium which provides all of the meeting rooms with lots of natural daylight. All of the meeting rooms I saw where very white and modern (as is the venue as a whole).

The venue is very much a ‘it is what it says on the tin’ venue – it is well designed for day-time corporate events looking to be close to Canary Wharf in a nice, modern, corporate style venue with a large capacity and lots of breakout rooms if required.

The Doubletree – Tower Hill

Coming away from Canary Wharf, Alex headed over to Tower Bridge to see what the hotels here had to offer. First stop – The Doubletree Tower Bridge. Here’s his take on property…

The Doubletree Tower Bridge is a modern purpose-built hotel less than a five minute walk from Tower Hill station, and Tower Gateway DLR station, and the Tower of London itself. The hotel opens onto a large spacious atrium which is about two/three stories high, with a large glass skyroof flooding the area with natural daylight.

The meeting rooms are located upstairs with a large mezzanine area overlooking the atrium. This mezzanine area is used for catering (either set times or free-flowing) and registration if needs be, there is also some soft seating for informal breakouts. The meeting rooms are nice and fresh, with lots of natural daylight, overlooking the neighbouring streets. The bedrooms are decorated in a nice corporate manner, and are of a decent size.

Perhaps the hotel’s nicest feature is the Savage Garden Restaurant, located at the top of the hotel on the 12th floor, with views towards the Thames, the Tower of London, and the Shard. The restaurant has several areas that can be completely privatised (including two private rooms), either for daytime meetings, or more typically for drinks receptions, dinners and parties. The views are lovely, and include some iconic London sights.

Qbic London

Heading over to Aldgate, Alex stopped of at the Qbic London and here’s his take on the hotel…

The Qbic London is located just off Altab Ali Park in the Aldgate/Brick Lane area of the City of London. For fashionistas, the hotel is a very short walk from the famous Brick Lane Market, and is less than a five minute walk from either Aldgate East or Aldgate Stations.

The hotel opens onto a cosy informal reception area, which is also a lounge, bar and the hotel’s main restaurant. The hotel has just three meeting rooms, two of which are directly off the restaurant (and can be combined with each other), both enjoy natural daylight. They are of a small size, together they can fit around 30 delegates. There is also a smaller meeting room downstairs on the lower ground floor that does not have natural daylight, this is the hotel’s last-let room for meetings.

The hotel as a whole is decorated in a stylish modern way with lots of colour and informal touches, the design is to not be a typical corporate-feeling hotel, and instead to be more orientated towards a creative, youthful atmosphere. The bedrooms are slightly unique, they all have a pod built inside them that encompasses the bed and bathroom, these pods are placed into empty bedrooms and built from the inside.

The hotel is one of London’s most sustainable hotels, and has a key focus on being as green-friendly as possible. A lot of hotels pay lip-service to being green, but the Qbic is one of the most consistently environmentally friendly properties I have visited, which is impressive for a densely urban location. The décor is very modern, funky, and youthful, and is well suited for clients looking for a venue which reflects those attributes.

The Clapham Grand – the final stop

As Alex’s tour nears the end, his final stop was to see The Grand Clapham. Here’s his thoughts on what the venue has to offer…

The Clapham Grand is a traditional theatre over one hundred years old, and now operates as a nightclub, live music venue, cinema, and also takes bookings for private hire events. The theatre is directly opposite Clapham Junction station for National Rail and London Overground Services. The venue has a large stalls on the ground floor, with a balcony and boxes overlooking, as well as a private bar that can be hired separately. The venue has been decorated in a modern manner, albeit in a traditional building.

I enjoyed visiting the venue, although the lack of a nearby Underground Station may make it relatively difficult to access by London’s standards. The venue could work well for clients looking for something unusual, or a corporate away-day or creative team building style activities.
