Marriott plans to open seven EDITION hotels this year

Marriott’s EDITION brand hotels have announced that they are planning to open seven new hotels in 2021. These will be in Rome, Madrid, Dubai, Reykjavik,Tampa, Mexico’s Riviera Maya and a second property in Tokyo. There are 11 hotels worldwide at the moment and these new properties will expand the group to 18 properties with more in the pipeline for 2022 and beyond.

EUROPE

  • The Reykjavik EDITION – due to open in Summer 2021

This hotel is located next to the Harpa Concert Hall, in the centre of Reykjavik and will have 253 bedrooms, rooftop bar, ballroom and meeting space.

  • The Rome EDITION – due to open in Autumn 2021

Situated in the centre of Rome, close to Via Veneto and Bernini’s Tritone Fountain in Piazza Barberini, this hotel will be Edition’s first hotel in Italy. There will be 95 guest rooms and suites; the Penthouse suite will have a private terrace. The hotel will have a rooftop terrace and outside dining space, meeting rooms, rooftop swimming pool, gym and treatment rooms.

  • The Madrid EDITION – due to open in Autumn 2021

The first EDITION in Spain opened in Barcelona in 2018. The Madrid EDITION is near Puerta de Sol in a quiet square surrounded by historic buildings and within walking distance of three of most important art museums in Madrid. The hotel will have 200 beautifully appointed bedrooms and suites, some with terraces. There are five food and beverage outlets including a signature restaurant, cocktail bar, Sky Bar and rooftop terrace, together with an outdoor pool, fitness centre and spa. Flexible studios will provide around 350sqm of meeting and event space.

REST OF THE WORLD

  • The Dubai EDITION – due to open in Autumn 2021

Situated in downtown Dubai, the hotel is opposite the Dubai Mall. There will be 210 rooms and suites, three food and beverage outlets, pool, spa and fitness centre. In addition to a ballroom, there will be several meeting rooms and event spaces boasting multiple meeting rooms

  • The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza – due to open in Autumn 2021

This will be the second Edition to open in Tokyo and is located close to Chuo Street in the shopping and leisure area of the city. There will be 78 bedrooms and suites, a rooftop bar, meeting studio and a fitness centre.

  • The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai – due to open in Winter 2021

EDITION Hotels’ first in Mexico, this will be a beachfront property hotel located within the Kanai development. Riviera Maya is known for its mangroves and lagoons, ancient Mayan cities, tropical beaches, ecological reserves and the world’s second largest coral reef. The hotel will have 180 bedrooms and suites, six food and beverage outlets,beach club, destination spa. As well as multiple meeting spaces, the hotel will also have an extensive outdoor deck for large scale events and parties.

  • The Tampa EDITION – due to open in Winter 2021

The Tampa EDITION will become the fifth US property from EDITION Hotels and is located within the new Water Street Tampa neighbourhood. The hotel will have 172 bedrooms and suites and six food and beverage outlets, including a rooftop bar and terrace. The property will also have a spa, fitness centre and more than 550sqm of flexible meeting and events space.

Marriott’s EDITION Hotels due to open three hotels this year

The lifestyle brand, EDITION Hotels, conceived by Ian Schrager will increase its hotels from 10 to 13 by opening three more this year. There are a total of 15 hotels in the pipeline, which are due for completion in the next three years and will double the size of the group:

2020 openings

  • The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon

Due to be completed in the Summer, this will be the first EDITION Hotel in Japan, the Tokyo EDITION Toranomon is part of the redevelopment of the former Pastoral Building. This is a mixed-use project of homes, offices, and a medical centre. The hotel will have 206 guest rooms with views of Tokyo skyline, three restaurants and bars, spa, indoor pool and fitness center

  • The Reykjavik EDITION

This hotel will open towards the end of this year, in the centre of Reykjavik. It will have 250 rooms and suites, a private rooftop, nightlife space and ballroom, three restaurants and a café.

  • The Dubai EDITION

Again, this hotel should open at the end of this year and is located in downtown Dubai, opposite the world-famous Dubai Mall. There will be 210 rooms and suites, seven restaurants, swimming pools, pool deck dining, a spa and fitness centre, events spaces with multiple meeting rooms and a ballroom.

When we’re organising an event abroad, we need our attendees to be as safe as they can be while they are travelling, when they are there and when they go out to see the city. The Economist Intelligence Unit has published the 2019 Safe Cities Index, which ranks 60 cities across 57 indicators covering digital security, health security, infrastructure security and personal security.

Cities in the Asia-Pacific region make up six of the top ten destination, although the region does not have any bearing on the results. The top twenty cities are as follows:

Infrastructure Security

The top cities in this sector are Singapore, Osaka, Barcelona, Tokyo and Madrid. These cities have good continuity management plans, pedestrian friendliness, institutional capacity and disaster-risk informed development.

Personal Security

The top cities in this sector are Singapore, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Wellington, which have strong personal security policies, community-based patrolling and low levels of violent and petty crime, illegal drug use, corruption and organised crime.

Digital Security

The top cities in this sector are Tokyo, Singapore, Chicago, Washington DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco. They have low levels of infection by computer viruses and malware and a high level of knowledge about privacy policies, awareness of cybersecurity and dedicated cyber-security teams.

Crime, a natural disaster or terrorism can happen anywhere, but if a destination is prepared to deal with it efficiently and has a good emergency service, then that makes it a safer city for a conference or meeting. The recent riots in Hong Kong have had a significant impact on the attractiveness of the destination for business travellers, who are switching to Singapore and other Asian destinations to avoid disruption.
